Long journeys have a default solution and everyone knows its weaknesses: the tablet works brilliantly for ninety minutes, and then produces a child who is simultaneously overstimulated and bored. The alternative isn’t colouring books. It’s the category of small electronic devices that work with no Wi-Fi, no signal, no account and no data connection whatsoever - which turns out to be exactly what a plane, a motorway and a rented cottage all have in common.

The trick is knowing what survives travel and what doesn’t. Some things pack beautifully. Some things scatter forty screws across an aircraft floor at 35,000 feet. Here’s the split.

The Rule: Finished Devices Travel, Builds Don’t

The single most useful distinction for packing.

Build at home. Play on the move. Assembly requires a flat, stable surface, good light, and the ability to drop a screw and find it again - a tray table has none of those. It’s a different kind of tired. Passive screen time on a long journey leaves kids fractious at the other end. Building, programming and cooperative play leave them tired in the way that produces sleep rather than meltdown.

Travel is where devices earn their keep. A kit that gets used on a plane, at a campsite and in a hotel room stops being a Christmas present and becomes something the kid actually owns.
