Let's go. 🚀
Flight: How to Take Off with Science!

Who hasn't dreamed of soaring through the clouds, feeling the wind in their hair, and enjoying a bird's-eye view of the world? Probably catch a few bugs in their mouth from time to time. 🤮
But how does flight actually work?
And could we ever achieve it like our favorite superheroes?
To understand flight, we need to grasp a few key concepts.
First, there's lift, the upward force that counteracts gravity.
Think of a bird's wings or an airplane's wings; their shape is designed to create lift as air flows over them. This is all down to the shape that allows air to travel over the wing and then down towards the ground.
Then there's drag, the force that opposes motion. It's like the resistance you feel when you try to run through water.
If you run your hand around in front of you right now, that very slight resistance is drag. As with all things science, you need energy to get through it.
To overcome drag, we need thrust, a force that propels us forward.
Finally, there's gravity, the force that pulls everything towards the Earth. If you want to fly, you'll need to have a force greater than gravity (or lower your mass so gravity is less effective) to stay away from the ground, otherwise known as flying!
Now, let's apply these concepts to our favorite flying superheroes.
Superman, with his incredible strength and defiance of gravity, seems to soar through the sky effortlessly.
It's been described by fans that Superman achieves this by manipulating the gravitons around him. It's essentially defying gravity and floating up, so it seems so effortless.
Iron Man, on the other hand, relies on technology, using his repulsor rays to generate thrust and his suit's aerodynamics to create lift. This counters drag and gravity, and thus, he flies!
But superhero flight isn't just a fantasy.
Humans have been achieving flight for over a century, thanks to the principles of STEM!
Engineers have used their knowledge of physics and aerodynamics to design incredible flying machines, from the Wright brothers' first airplane to the supersonic jets that crisscross the globe today.
And who knows, maybe one day we'll even crack the code of anti-gravity, just like Superman!
DIY Challenge: Want to experiment with flight? Grab some paper and fold your own airplane! Try different designs and see which one flies the farthest. You can even add weights or adjust the wings to see how it affects the flight path. ✈️
Super Strength: The Might of Muscles (and More!)
From the Hulk's earth-shattering punches to Spider-Man's effortless web-slinging, superhuman strength has always been a staple of superhero lore.
But what makes these characters so incredibly strong?
In the real world, strength comes from our muscles.
When we contract our muscles, they pull on our bones, allowing us to lift, push, and pull objects. The bigger and stronger our muscles, the more force we can generate.
Of course, regular exercise, training, and a healthy diet are key to building muscle and increasing strength.
But superheroes often possess strength far beyond human limits.
The Hulk, for example, seems to gain unlimited strength from his gamma-powered rage. Spider-Man, on the other hand, owes his enhanced strength to a radioactive spider bite that altered his physiology.
Note that both of these are caused by genetically altering radiation that has affected the cells in these people and changed them forever. That said, absolutely do not go walking around in nuclear power plants or lie in front of X-ray machines.
While these explanations are rooted in comic book fiction, they do raise interesting questions about the potential limits of human strength.
Could we ever achieve superhuman strength in real life? Perhaps! Scientists and engineers are constantly developing new technologies that could enhance our physical capabilities.
Exoskeletons, wearable devices that provide external support and power, are already helping people lift heavier objects and perform tasks that would be impossible without assistance.
And who knows, maybe one day we'll discover ways to enhance our muscles at a cellular level, unlocking levels of strength we never thought possible.
DIY Challenge: Want to experience the power of leverage? Gather some simple materials like a ruler, a small block, and some coins. Create a simple lever by placing the ruler on the block (the fulcrum) and experiment with lifting different weights by applying force to the other end of the ruler. You'll be amazed at how much you can lift with a little leverage! 💪
Here's a video that can show you what's possible.
Invisibility: Now You See Me, Now You Don't!

There’s also an invisible person posing in that photo 😉
Let's face it: invisibility is just plain cool.
The ability to vanish into thin air, to move unseen and unheard, has a certain mystique that's hard to resist. But how exactly does invisibility work?
And could we ever make ourselves disappear like Violet Parr from The Incredibles or Susan Storm from The Fantastic Four?
To understand invisibility, we need to talk about light.
We see objects because they reflect light into our eyes.
When light hits an object, it can be reflected, refracted (bent), or absorbed. Invisibility, then, is all about manipulating light so that it doesn't reflect off an object and reach our eyes.
Superheroes like Violet and Susan seem to achieve invisibility by bending light around them, making them appear transparent.
While this might seem like pure fantasy, scientists are actually exploring ways to manipulate light using special materials called metamaterials.
These materials have unique properties that can bend light in unusual ways, potentially leading to cloaking devices that could render objects invisible.
But invisibility isn't just about high-tech gadgets and futuristic materials. Nature has its own ways of achieving invisibility.
Chameleons, for example, can change their skin color to blend in with their surroundings, effectively becoming invisible to predators. And some deep-sea creatures are transparent, allowing them to disappear into the dark depths of the ocean.
DIY Challenge: Want to try a simple invisibility trick? Grab a glass, a coin, and some water. Place the coin in the glass and slowly fill it with water. As the water level rises, the coin seems to disappear! This is due to refraction, the bending of light as it passes from water to air. Pretty cool, right? 🪙✨
Beyond the Big Three: Super Speed, Telekinesis, and Shape-Shifting!
Image by Fellipe Ditadi on Unsplash.com
We've explored flight, super strength, and invisibility, but the world of superpowers is vast and varied! Let's take a quick peek at a few other amazing abilities and the science that might explain them.
Super Speed
Imagine running faster than a speeding train, like The Flash or Quicksilver!
Speed is all about how quickly something moves from one point to another. To achieve super speed, you'd need to accelerate your body to incredible velocities, requiring immense amounts of energy and some serious physics-defying technology.
But hey, scientists are already exploring the possibilities of supersonic travel and particle accelerators, so who knows what the future holds?
Telekinesis
Ever wished you could move objects with your mind, like Jean Grey or Eleven from Stranger Things?
Telekinesis, the ability to manipulate matter with thought, might seem like pure magic, but researchers are exploring the potential of brain-computer interfaces to control external devices with our thoughts.
While we're not quite at the point of levitating objects with our minds, the future of brain-powered technology is full of exciting possibilities.
Shape-Shifting
Mystique's ability to transform her appearance at will is both fascinating and a bit freaky.
Shape-shifting involves altering the physical structure of your body, which would require some serious biological manipulation.
While we're not quite at the point of transforming into other people, scientists are exploring the potential of genetic engineering and advanced materials to create shape-shifting robots and devices.
These are just a few examples of the incredible powers that have captured our imaginations. Who knows what other amazing abilities might be possible in the future? With the power of STEM, the possibilities are truly endless!
